Confessions – Scott and I aren’t very good at celebrating family milestones. It’s a bit pathetic sometimes but gladly, neither of us seem to mind the other’s lack of enthusiasm for birthdays or anniversaries. (I do have to give Scott a BIG shout-out here as he hosted a massive surprise 55th Birthday party for me a number of years ago so hands down – he’s the more thoughtful of the two of us.)
This past weekend we broke with tradition – we finally snuck away for a lovely celebration. Just 35 minutes from our apartment we found Latitude 0 (because we’re at the equator). We’d never visited and Scott had never even heard of the hotel.
We had much to celebrate – my recent birthday, our 28th Anniversary, a wonderful time in the US over Christmas and being in Uganda for two years this week.
We chose our getaway well.
African luxury is usually a bit tired with lots of character. If you travel much here, you’ll read lots of reviews that sadly say something – “The service was ok and the food was good – but remember, this is Africa or T.I.A.” This approach frees the reviewer from any accountability for a future guest’s travel experience. Even the local hotels which are part of international chains are sufficient but not to the Holiday Inn Express standards of the U.S.
Well, we now must reconsider our pre-conceived notions. We stayed at Latitude 0. It’s a small boutique hotel with beautiful rooms, a pool, great food and spectacular local art throughout. The Kampala location opened three years ago, just before COVID. We are thrilled they survived. The very reasonable price, beautiful pool, high quality gym, and delicious food guarantees that we will return regularly.
If you come visit – we’ll take you!
Happy Birthday/Anniversary/New Year/Life/Friendship. Love to you!
Thanks neighbors…. Once again I need to take your advice! So grateful for you both!
So glad you had a good experience and could celebrate some good milestones. Maybe next time, don't wait so long. 😉 Love you guys, Jim and Janet
